A pulpit for 'Da Vinci Code' critics

09davi2184

From Thursday's NY Times: A Pulpit Online for Critics of 'The Da Vinci Code' Film.

At a time when conservative Christian groups have been particularly quick to strike back at Hollywood fare they find offensive, Sony Pictures faced a predicament with its coming film "The Da Vinci Code."

Should the studio try to mollify the critics who say the "Code" is blasphemy, with its plot describing a church conspiracy to cover up the truth that Jesus married and never rose from the dead? Or should it ignore the complainers, sit back and watch the controversy boost ticket sales?

Instead, Sony has decided to hand a big bullhorn to the detractors of "The Da Vinci Code."

The company is putting up a Web site today — well ahead of the movie's release on May 19 — that will give a platform to some of the fiercest critics of "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown, the book that is the movie's source.

The site, thedavincichallenge.com, will post essays by about 45 Christian writers, scholars and leaders of evangelical organizations who will pick apart the book's theological and historical claims about Christianity. ...

Smart move by Sony: mollify your critics by including them in the conversation.

Here's the movie's trailer, by the way.

But what of the non-Christian critics? The book is a shallow detective yarn with one-dimensional characters. The conspiracy theory is fun, but lifted straight from another book (Holy Blood, Holy Grail), one which in turn was largely fantastic hypothesis masquerading as fact.

So aside from the allegation of blasphemy, what of the less melodramatic but at least as valid criticism, that the book simply isn't particularly good?

Well, Brown is stupid. If he is going to be proud and say he's all accurate, why is the title wrong? Da Vinci means of or from Vinci. Virgin of the Rocks painting is on wood so she can't possibly have folded it, plus it's heavy. John looks feminine and is next to Jesus because he is the youngest and a close friend(he was there with Virgin Mary when He was crucified) so that can't be Magdalene. There would only be 11 disciples on Last Supper, would Leonardo do that? Boycott the movie please.
